I stumbled across a Harry Potter quiz on -- of all places -- the NPR web site. I'm sure it's hosted elsewhere, but I'm too lazy to find the source. Early Christmas for me!

My copy of the Tales of Beedle the Bard arrived today! I spent the evening reading JKR's stories and deciphering her handwriting in the introduction. I think Rowling is at her best when she's creating the lore and whimsy of the Wizarding World. And I don't think it's a spoiler to to suspect that the fanfic writers will get a lot of mileage from the new book; The Hairy Heart: a Guide for Wizards Who Won't Commit, is a ready-made challenge.

Beedle is my second present to myself this week. My laptop is dying (I can't turn it off because it doesn't turn on again--it took 45 minutes of pressing the power button and rebooting the last time I tried turning it on) and I've ordered a new one. I chose a tablet with a swivel screen. Bad news is that it won't ship until next week.

I guess I'll just have to find another present for the week in between. I see a trip to the quilt shop in my future. ;)

As the next round of the SS/HG Exchange is opening, I'm still trying to decide if I should post my entry from the last round, In From the Cold, up to Ashwinder with my other stories. I like the story but I also know that there are two or three sections that I would really like to change. The piece would also need to be re-betaed by someone who actually reads HG/SS. I fairly that my original beta pinched her nose closed the entire time she was reading-- proof that you can't convert them all no matter how hard you try!

Maybe I'll take another look this weekend.

I've been testing some methods for saving docs in book-like formats using various softwares. Today I tried Microsoft Reader, which can turn Word docs into a nice little book format. But the Text-to-Speech function could use some work. Not only can't it distinguish between homonyms such as read (reed) and read (red), but it has some trouble with character names. "Weasley" becomes "wheel-eye" and Hermione turns into "her-mee-own-ee." Apparently the narrator is Viktor Krum ...

Other text to speech software I've used has had a dictionary function where one can teach the software pronunciations but I haven't found that utility in Microsoft Reader yet. Guess I'll have to put up with the "wheel-eyes."

Playing the HG/SS quiz has become one of my Sunday morning treats, along with the crossword from the paper and and Will Short's puzzle on Weekend Edition. Sometimes Sunday morning can stretch into Sunday afternoon ...

I am suffering from a horrible cold I picked up at a conference this week. I could feel my throat tightening up during the plane ride home and knew I was in trouble. Prescription: consume gallons of tea, knock back painkillers, ~~read many hot HG/SS stories,~~ work on Exchange fic that is due on Friday, and ignore the laundry (I don't plan on getting dressed today anyway.)

I wandered over to the HP Lexicon to check a fact or two for my Exchange story and discovered that they've cross-listed Hermione with the Weasleys! Ack! No! It cannot be!

She stuffs her thumbs in her ears and covers her eyes as she backs away carefully.

Signs of autumn ...

The temperatures are slowly dropping into the bearable range, while traffic is quickly becoming unbearable. Sure signs of fall in my neck of the woods. Mornings are wonderfully cool, and I feel like I'm waking from hibernation. Autumn is my favorite time of year. I love the colors, and I have an urge to sharpen new pencils and buy clean pads of paper.

I've been very industrious lately: cleaning the house and yard, pruning, quilting, and working on my story for the SS/HG Exchange. I've written two chapters, and I'm pleased with how the story is progressing. I don't expect that feeling to continue, but it's good while it lasts!

Pet Peeves -- AKA Today's Rant

I'm not sure why, but I grind my teeth every time I read, "Do you have link for that?" or worse, the demanding, "Link, please!" This is particularly true when it's a request for a story link where the previous poster has included the story name and/or author's name. My immediate gut reaction is to fire off, "Google it, idiot!" Maybe my ire stems from the childhood trauma of being told to "look it up". Maybe I think today's children should be forced to take the same metaphorical walk in the snow to the schoolhouse. But I really do wonder if the reason people insist on being hand-fed story links is because they are simply too lazy to do the search themselves or because they don't have basic internet skills.
